We broke down somewhere between Missouri and Kansas late in the night. We made it as far as Topeka in the morning and left the limping van at a service station along a drag that felt, as did most of the city, like a soundstage that had been waiting for the cast and crew to arrive for a very long time. We settled into a restaurant to pass the time; "hell of a place to break down and not be drinking" said the bartender.
